ecoBirdy transforms old plastic toys into beautiful design furniture for kids. The four-piece collection is entirely made of upcycled plastic waste and easily recyclable again. It includes a play table and a chair for children with sturdy legs and rounded edges, a lamp shaped like a rhinoceros and a kiwi-shaped storage container with removable beak.
Based in Antwerp/Belgium, the designers Vanessa Yuan and Joris Vanbriel have created a whole system from the collection and recycling of discarded plastic toys to the design and production of the sustainable children´s furniture. An accompanying school-programme and storybook has been designed to introduce youngsters to the concept of circular design and inspire them to contribute to a more sustainable future.
It was important for the founders that each step be based on social and environmental responsibility. In 2019 ecoBirdy was officially recognized as a Certified B Corporation – a certification for companies that meet the highest standards of social and environmental impact, using business as a force for good.
2019 German Design Award, Henry van de Velde Award (Belgium)
