How did you get the idea to develop your construction toy?

The idea of developing my construction toy ‘Imagix’ emerged during a design project I worked on for children at university. During this process, I realized how much I enjoyed designing for children and exploring this field. That’s why, for my graduation project, I decided to deepen this curiosity and focus on creating a toy that fosters creativity and imagination. My interest about open-ended toys and wooden toys was the basis of this project.

From the first idea to the finished prototype – how did you proceed?

My design process was shaped by observation, research, exploration and feedback from children. I aimed to design an open-ended construction toy that encourages creativity and allows children to create endless stories and objects using their imagination. Throughout this process, it was also important that the product was user-friendly and fun.

First, I sought answers to questions such as how children play, what forms and textures mean to them, what enhances their creativity, and what abstract and concrete things represent for them. I began testing prototypes with children, experimenting with different forms and textures. Based on the reactions of the children to the prototypes, I continued to improve my design and finalized my toy ‘Imagix’.

What makes your construction toy different from other educational toys on the market?

The fabric pieces create surfaces. The structure of the ropes I designed adds a unique touch to the play by enabling the creation of different ways of bending. Shapes and materials come together. Also the ease of assembly and disassembly allows children to quickly build new structures, giving them the freedom to have fun and experiment with their ideas and stories without the fear of failure.

Have you been able to test your construction toy with children? If so, what were their reactions?

I worked with children throughout every stage of my product development process. A few days a week, I visited kindergartens to play with prototypes and observe children from different age groups. The feedback I received played a significant role in shaping the final version of the product.

Children of all ages enjoyed playing with this construction set because each age group could interact with the toy in different ways. Children generally interacted with my toy through the following steps:

1. Exploring the textures, shapes, and sizes by touching
2. Understanding how the pieces connect and combine with each other.
3. Experimenting with the pieces and combinations to create objects and scenarios.
4. Developing structures and stories.
5. Redesigning creations and sharing them with family or friends through play.

‘Imagix’ is currently still a prototype – what are your plans for the future?

My future goals include developing the product, creating a brand identity and the packaging then moving on to the production process. I aim to create a construction toy that can be sold in stores in various set options. Designing product that offers a fun, unique, and inspiring experience for both children and adults is exciting. I aim for this toy to be a value that will be passed down from generation to generation.

A few personal questions at the end: Tell us briefly about your background. Why do you design for children?

I studied Industrial Design at Bilgi University in Istanbul. During my university years, I worked in the university’s atelier, where I thoroughly enjoyed creating things by hand and experimenting with different materials. This process allowed me to expand my horizons and improve my skills in production. Later, I interned as a Model Designer at The LEGO Group in Billund, Denmark. It was an incredibly enjoyable experience for me. I had the chance to work with many talented designers. Completing my internship further fueled my passion for designing toys.

Kids have a vast imagination, and they are not afraid to create or experiment, no matter how unconventional it may seem. When an adult first interacts with my construction set, they tend to overthink and want what they build to “look good,” often hesitating to start. But kids are different; they dive straight into play, combining what they’ve learned and observed in their daily lives with their imagination to create incredible stories and constructions. Every time I witness this, it excites me. Children remind me of my playful and creative side and are a constant source of inspiration.

Are there other products for children that you have designed or would like to design?

I designed multifunctional children’s furniture and really enjoyed the process. I want to continue designing toys, and I am passionate about the idea of designing playful products and objects. I am excited to try new things in these fields!
